Arabic language learning in Islamic boarding school plays an important role in supporting students Islamic knowledge and communication skills. One of the essential elements in Arabic language learning is vocabulary (mufrodat) mastery as the foundation of language skills. This study aims to analyse Arabic vocabulary learning at Karangasem Islamic Boarding School, identify students’ vocabulary mastery problems from the perspective of behaviourism and nativism theories, and formulate relevant alternative learning solutions based on these theories. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were obtained from the researcher’s reflective experience as an alumnus of the boarding school and written interviews with a teacher, supported by relevant literature studies. The findings indicate that vocabulary learning has been implemented through memorization and language habituation; however, it has not yet resulted in functional vocabulary mastery. This condition is influenced by weak reinforcement, inconsistent language habituation, and social factors that discourage students from using Arabic in daily communication. Therefore, Arabic vocabulary learning needs to emphasize consistent language reinforcement and the creation of a supportive language environment to foster students; communicative vocabulary mastery
