Abstract

The model of Islamic higher education in Indonesia continues to evolve, particularly in efforts to integrate the pesantren tradition with the modern university system. One example of this integration can be found in the mahasantri system at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, where new students are required to live at Ma'had Al-Jami'ah during their first year of study. This study aims to analyze the concept of mahasantri, its philosophical basis, the guidance system applied, and its impact on student character building. The method used is library research, utilizing official institutional sources, scientific journals, and Islamic education literature. The results of the study show that the mahasantri system is a form of integration between academic education and pesantren-based spiritual guidance. The guidance program includes ta'lim Al-Qur'an, Islamic studies, worship guidance, foreign language reinforcement, and character building through communal life in the dormitory. This system contributes to improving student discipline, independence, spirituality, and social solidarity. Despite facing challenges in adaptation and time management, the mahasantri model is considered relevant in responding to the needs of character education in the modern era. With an integrative approach between knowledge and faith, Ma'had Al-Jami'ah serves as the foundation for producing graduates who are not only academically excellent but also have Islamic character.
