Strategi memahami arti bahasa arab dalam mempelajari Kitab (at-Tadzhib) di Ma’had UIN Malang

Abstract

The study of classical Islamic texts in pesantren and Islamic higher education dormitories plays an important role in improving Arabic proficiency as well as Islamic understanding among students. One of the books studied at Ma’had Sunan Ampel Al-Aly, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, is At-Tadzhib, a basic fiqh text written in classical unvowelled Arabic. This study aims to analyze students’ strategies in understanding Arabic meanings while studying the text, the obstacles encountered, and relevant teaching models. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using questionnaires and literature analysis. The findings show that the main difficulties faced by students include limited vocabulary mastery, weak understanding of nahwu-sharaf (Arabic grammar and morphology), and dense daily schedules in the dormitory environment. Common strategies used by students are identifying sentence structures, tracing root words, repeated reading, using dictionaries, and discussing with peers and teachers. Effective learning models include the integration of grammar mastery, regular reading practice, vocabulary reinforcement, and gradual analytical methods. This study confirms that success in understanding classical Islamic texts is determined not only by linguistic competence but also by teaching methods, learning motivation, and a supportive academic environment. Therefore, pedagogical innovation is necessary to make kitab kuning learning more effective and adaptive to students’ needs.
