Abstract

Language is one of the important skills that students need to master in facing the development of education and global communication. One of the efforts made by Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to improve students’ language skills is through the implementation of a multilingual environment. This article aims to describe the implementation of a multilingual environment in pesantren and explain its role in improving students’ language abilities. This study used a library research approach by collecting various literature sources, including books, scientific journals, academic articles, and previous studies relevant to the topic. The data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis techniques. The results show that the multilingual environment in pesantren is implemented through various language programs, such as the use of Arabic and English in daily communication, daily vocabulary activities, muhadharah, muhadatsah, and language evaluation programs. The implementation of this environment plays an important role in improving speaking skills, enriching vocabulary, enhancing listening skills, and building students’ self-confidence in using foreign languages. The success of implementing a multilingual environment is also influenced by supporting factors such as a conducive environment, teacher support, and students’ motivation in learning languages.
