Thesis supervision practices in higher education are generally still conducted through repeated printing of manuscripts during the revision process. This conventional approach leads to excessive paper consumption, which indirectly contributes to environmental degradation, particularly deforestation as paper is primarily produced from wood pulp. Amid growing global awareness of environmental protection and sustainable development, universities hold a strategic role in implementing environmentally friendly academic systems. This study aims to examine the urgency of adopting digital-based thesis supervision as an effort to reduce paper usage and as a form of institutional responsibility toward environmental sustainability. The research employs a qualitative method using a literature review and conceptual approach by analyzing books, scientific journals, and reports related to digitalization in higher education and the environmental impacts of paper production. The findings indicate that digital thesis supervision enhances efficiency in terms of time and cost, significantly reduces paper consumption, and supports the implementation of paperless systems and green campus initiatives. Therefore, digital-based thesis supervision is not only academically relevant but also an urgent and strategic measure to support sustainable development within higher education institutions.
