Abstract

Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) constitute the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia and have historically played a central role in the transmission of Islamic knowledge, character development, spiritual formation, and leadership training for Muslim generations. However, the rapid advancement of globalization, digitalization, and educational modernization has posed significant challenges to the sustainability of pesantren traditions, particularly through the weakening of classical Islamic scholarship, religious authority, and the cultural values that have long underpinned the formation of the salaf al-ṣāliḥ generation. This study aims to analyze the urgency of preserving and sustaining pesantren culture as a foundation for developing future Muslim leaders who are deeply rooted in the classical Islamic intellectual tradition while remaining capable of responding to contemporary societal changes in Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative library research approach by analyzing recent scholarly articles and academic publications on pesantren education and socio-religious transformation. The findings demonstrate that pesantren culture, which is grounded in the values of sincerity (ikhlāṣ), exemplary conduct (uswah), service (khidmah), self-reliance, adab (ethical conduct), and the preservation of scholarly traditions, provides a fundamental framework for nurturing Muslims with integrity, moderation, leadership capacity, and social resilience. Therefore, preserving pesantren culture represents not only an effort to maintain Indonesia's Islamic educational heritage but also a strategic initiative for ensuring the continuity of Islamic civilization and strengthening the socio-cultural development of the Indonesian Archipelago amid contemporary challenges.
