Khidmah santri is a unique educational tradition in Islamic boarding schools rooted in Islamic values of devotion, manners, and the pursuit of knowledge. In contemporary developments, the practice of khidmah is not only understood as a means of character building, but also raises debate when it is perceived to have shifted towards the exploitation of santri labor. This study aims to analyze the meaning of khidmah based on an Islamic perspective, the forms of khidmah practice in Islamic boarding schools, and to critically examine the duality between devotion and exploitation in its implementation. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study approach sourced from relevant academic studies. The urgency of this research lies in the need to reconstruct the understanding of khidmah so that it remains in accordance with the principles of educational justice and protection of santri as students. The results of the study show that khidmah is essentially an effective non-formal educational instrument in shaping the character, work ethic, and spirituality of santri, but has the potential to experience a distortion of meaning when it loses its pedagogical foundation and proportional management. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of systematic, educational, and equitable management of khidmah so that the noble values of service are maintained without negating the rights and dignity of santri in the pesantren education system.
