Abstract

This study examines stress management dynamics within Islamic boarding school (pesantren) environments through the phenomenon of “Spiritual Stress,” defined as the psychological imbalance experienced by students due to strict disciplinary systems that affect motivation and emotional stability. Using a qualitative case study approach through observation and in-depth interviews, the research analyzes the role of pesantren as a collective psychological recovery space grounded in structured spiritual practices. The findings reveal that stress management in pesantren is supported by three main pillars: self-regulation through religious rituals as a form of emotional catharsis, collective solidarity (ukhuwah) as a natural peer-support system, and the charismatic leadership of caregivers that fosters a sense of security. In conclusion, pesantren functions as a unique ecosystem that effectively integrates discipline with spiritual recovery, positioning it as a relevant alternative model for community-based mental health management through a collective spiritual approach.
